“Fur lined handcuffs,” Nick said with a grin and a blush. “Thanks a lot, Jacq.” All the gifts had been along the same lines. Greg got Warrick a Shrek t-shirt, and Catherine got Archie a hat that said “Y2K: The end is near!” Sophia didn’t seem all that impressed with the Chia Pet she got from Nick, but maybe they took this kind of thing seriously on the day shift. Sara had never seen a serious gift here. “Who’s got Sara?” Greg asked, noticing that she was the only one left without a gift. “I do,” Warrick said from behind her. “But I forgot it in the truck. I’ll give it to you later.” “Come on,” Catherine said, “what fun is that? She’s got to open it in front of everyone. Go get it.” “I’ll give it to her later,” Warrick said, shaking his head. “These guys have to get to work.” “That’s true,” said Grissom. He began handing out assignments, and the lab techs scattered to their respective labs. Sara took her assignment and headed down the hall, wondering why Warrick was so hesitant to go get her gift. As she walked across the parking lot, she heard him call out to her. “Hey Sara, wait up.” He caught up to her and put his hand on the small of her back, steering her towards his truck. “Come on, I’ll give you your present.” “Why didn’t you want to give it to me before?” she asked. Warrick shrugged as he unlocked the door. He reached in and pulled out a small gift bag, and if it was possible, he looked nervous. Sara grinned as she took it from him, but the grin faded when she saw the box inside. She pulled out the unmistakable robins-egg-blue box, tied with a white ribbon. “Warrick, this isn’t…” she stammered. “Just open it,” he said. She opened the box and gasped at what she saw. She wasn’t very girly, but she dared any woman to not be in awe of this. The simple pendant was gorgeous. Four diamonds, each a tiny bit bigger than the last, hung straight down, followed by a blue sapphire. Sara’s birthstone. “Warrick,” she whispered. “This must have cost…” “Don’t worry about it,” he said, cutting her off. “Why?” she asked. They were friends, but she had never received a gift like this, even from a boyfriend. Warrick took her hand in his. “You deserve it.” He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it. He gave her hand a squeeze before he let it go and climbed into his truck. “I’ll see you later.” “Warrick,” she said, catching the door as he was about to close it. She leaned in and kissed him, responding when he deepened it. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome,” he said with a lazy smile. “Hey, why don’t you drop by after shift?” Sara smiled and nodded, kissing him again quickly before stepping back and closing his door. She looked at the pendant as he drove away, thinking that this might just be a good Christmas after all.
