Buffy Tarot Cards - Major Arcana

The Major Arcana, or 'trumps', as they are sometimes called, are 22 Cards which represent the major symbolic archetypes. In a Tarot reading, the appearance of a card from the Major Arcana suggests a matter of significant weight and attention, emphasizing an issue or situation which is much broader than day-to-day matters.

They may be considered individually or as a series which encompasses the 'Fool's Journey', beginning with 'The Fool' (Card 0) and continuing as he journeys through life and encounters, for example, his parental figures (The Empress and Emperor, Cards 3 and 4), change in life direction (The Wheel, Card 10) challenges and obstacles (The Devil, Card 15), and finally reaching fulfillment and fresh new liberation at the end of the journey (The Sun, Card 19; and The World, Card 21).

The life journey which Buffy (and her friends) take throughout the seven seasons of the television series might easily be considered in a similar way; Buffy began her task as The Slayer with much of the same innocence as is represented by 'The Fool', she was guided by her mother Joyce and her mentor Giles in much the same way as 'The Empress' and 'The Emperor' represent the parental figures encountered in the Major Arcana.
